The mermaids I painted are not only bound together by sisterhood but their
sea glass necklaces. The students in my, "The Art of Jewelry Design"
classes at Cedar Shoals and Clarke Central High Schools in Athens, GA
named the four...Melvina, Maria, Melinda, and Mariella. The students
made the necklaces as well as participating in a creative writing assignment
of developing a character description for each mermaid.
The mermaids will be traveling this summer.
They are all original designs... acrylic paint with a high gloss
sealant.
You can read about the mermaids and their travels in a book which will
be published .

The traveling mermaids with the sea glass necklaces...

My name is Melvina. I so love seaweed...it's like the meaning of life for me...you can
lie in it...mess with it...and use it in all types of salads. As the middle child of the family,
I feel like I should just focus on myself...especially my long golden locks. My mother did
not give me enough attention as a child; therefore, resulting in some narcissistic tendencies.
I am now trying to work through some of these issues through meditation, painting, and
helping others...to name a few. At the moment, I still feel like no one understands me.

My name is Mariella...the oldest sister. I am the smartest and the most charming of all my family.
I rule the seas, but what they don't know is that I secretly own a seashell and seaweed business.
It brings in all the clams! By the way, if you are wondering, my eyes are naturally turquoise. I work
really hard on my bod. I killed a sea otter in a past life...that's why my tail is so long. Unfortunately,
my sisters don't really appreciate all my hard work. I practically raised them...they should be happy.

My name is Maria...the second oldest of the group. I believe that life is too beautiful to waste. I spend
my time helping...let's not say unattractive or homely mermaids...but those who are not making the
most of their hidden gifts...feel and look their best! After all, there is light in every dark corner, and
every unnatural can seem beautiful. I am a shark attack survivor. I lost one of my arms in the attack,
but, I have risen above it and spend many days working with injured sharks. How's that for
"forgiveness"? In fact, I've met a really nice shark, and I'm waiting to see where it goes...although my
family has tried to warn me of him...there's a light in his pitch dark eyes that I know he has for only me.
It's funny though...that look resembles the look he gets before he goes into a "feeding frenzy".

My name is Melinda. I was born as a 70's child...I love to feel free and listen to the words of Mother
Nature. I think my orange hair is my best feature, but I have to admit all my features are beautiful!
Even though I am the youngest, the other mermaids have nothing on me. Driven by the angel inside
me and growing up in the shadow of my oldest sister, Mariella, the first born...I have to admit I spend
a lot of my time devising plans to take my rightful place on the throne of my ancestors. As always the
baby of the family perceives the older ones as being , "bigger, stronger, and smarter". It's exhausting!
My baby book is still incomplete...what does that tell you? Sometimes, I act like a bimbo, but deep down
inside, I know I am the genius of the group. My older sisters are a little jealous...wishing they were more
like me!
